State volleyball rankings: week 2
Posted by Sandy Ringer
OK, the dice are back in their box and I've come up with Week 2 state volleyball
rankings below.
Actually, I made several phone calls and gave this considerable thought, but in
some cases I felt I might as well toss a coin to decide the order, especially in
3A. Each of last week's top-six lost at least one match, although for some it
was to a quality 4A team.
As impressed as I was with East Valley of Spokane at Saturday's Puget Sound
Adidas Invitational, I had a difficult time vaulting the team all of the way
from "Others" to No. 1, so I didn't. No doubt, the Knights should have been in
that original top-10, but I took past history into consideration and they have
not been a state qualifier in more than a decade (last appearance was in 1996)
and the school has never trophied in volleyball.
That should change this year, for sure.
I did give East Valley the No. 2 spot, just ahead of last week's No. 1, Auburn
Mountainview. After all, the Knights bettered the Lions in Saturday's
championship match.
Who's this week's No. 1? You could debate this all day, but I finally went with
Shorecrest, which had debuted at No. 2 last week. Sure, the Scots lost last
week, but it was to a quality 4A team, Kamiak, which is now in the 4A poll, and
it went five games. I figured they shouldn't be punished for that. Kennedy lost
to Edmonds-Woodway, now No. 6 in 4A, in the semifinals of the Meridian
Tournament. Again, that shouldn't count too much against the Lancers, who only
slip one spot to No. 4 (with East Valley jumping up, most everyone else has to
move down a little).
Shadle Park of Spokane leap-frogs Prairie, which played poorly in a 3-0 loss to
Skyview of Vancouver (No. 5 in 4A). The Highlanders took a game off Mountainview
in the semifinals Saturday.
After electing a new No. 1 in 3A, the most difficult decision for me was who to
drop out of the top-10. I finally had to bump Bishop Blanchet -- some thanks for
starting the season 3-0, huh? Mount Si, Eastside Catholic and Mercer Island had
done nothing to hurt themselves, either, and were originally ranked ahead of the
Braves. It finally wound up being between Blanchet and Mercer Island. Both had
3-1 wins over Skyline, but Blanchet's game scores were a tad closer, so MI stays
in for at least another week.
I'm anxious to see what happens in that Mount Si-Mercer Island match Wednesday.
The only real changes in 4A see E-W moving from No. 10 to No. 6 and Kamiak
moving into the poll at No. 7. Auburn Riverside, still a work in progress, moves
back on the bubble. Riverside takes on No. 8 Curtis of University Place tomorrow
night and we'll get a better idea about both teams.
Actually, we'll know a whole lot more after Saturday's Kent Classic, which
includes several of the top-10 4A and 3A teams, including Kentwood, Monroe,
Skyview, Curtis, Issaquah (which stays in another week, despite the lopsided
loss to KW, dropping from sixth to 10th), Eastside Catholic, Mount Si and Mercer
Island. Rogers of Puyallup -- which probably would be at No. 11 in 4A, if I went
that deep -- gets another shot to impress along with Blanchet and some of the
other "Others."
So, here it is, and let the debate begin again:
Class 4A
1. Mead (Spokane)
2. Kentwood (Covington)
3. Lewis and Clark (Spokane)
4. Monroe
5. Skyview (Vancouver)
6. Edmonds-Woodway
7. Kamiak (Mukilteo)
8. Curtis (University Place)
9. Kamiakin (Kennewick)
10. Issaquah
Others (alphabetically) -- Auburn Riverside, Bellarmine Prep, Bethel (Graham),
Bothell, Central Kitsap Eisenhower (Yakima), Kentlake, Kentridge, Marysville-Pilchuck,
Olympia, Puyallup, Rogers (Puyallup), Skyline (Issaquah), Southridge
(Kennewick), Walla Walla.
Class 3A
1. Shorecrest (Shoreline)
2. East Valley (Spokane)
3. Auburn Mountainview
4. Kennedy (Burien)
5. Shadle Park (Spokane)
6. Prairie (Brush Prairie)
7. Sumner
8. Mount Si (Snoqualmie)
9. Eastside Catholic (Sammamish)
10. Mercer Island
Others (alphabetically) -- Bainbridge, Bishop Blanchet, Black Hills, Bonney
Lake, Camas, Enumclaw, Holy Names, Lakes (Lakewood), Mount Spokane, Olympic
(Silverdale), Seattle Prep, Union (Vancouver).

Its sweep success for East Valley
TYLER HEMSTREET; For The News Tribune
Last updated: September 14th, 2008 12:57 AM (PDT)
Auburn Mountainview, the top-ranked team in the Class 3A State Volleyball
Coaches Association preseason poll, were swept 25-18 and 25-19 by East Valley
(Spokane) in the championship match of the Puget Sound Adidas Invitational at
Auburn Mountainview on Saturday.
The 24-team tournament featured teams from all over the state, including 14
teams that participated in the 2007 state tournament.
After two rounds of pool play earlier in the day, the Lions entered the
championship bracket as the No.2 team in the tournament, and promptly took care
of No. 3 Shadle Park, 25-16, 20-25 and 15-11 to advance to the championship
match.
While Auburn Mountainviews tall front line of Megan McBride (6-foot-1) and
sisters Tara (6-1) and Tricia Patton (6-0) had their way with the smaller Shadle
Park, the Lions struggled against No. 1 East Valley.
Tied a 16 in the first game, the Knights went on a 7-0 run to take control,
using drop shots and strategically placed spikes in the soft center of Auburn
Mountainviews defense.
They were scrappy and had a lot of offensive options that gave us some trouble
today, Auburn Mountainview coach Momi Bowles said.
The Knights kept up the momentum in the second game, grabbing a 16-14 lead while
the Lions were plagued by unforced errors, including one when two players
collided.
They were smart with the ball, said McBride, who has committed to Oregon
State. They showed our weak areas and we want to thank them for that because
now we know what to work on for the season.
The Lions did take solace in that they placed in the tournament for the first
time in its three-year run. Past winners included Ferris in 2006 and Kamiak in
07.
The girls know weve got a laundry list of 10 things deep of things we need to
work on, Bowles said. If we just take it one step at a time not get too
concerned with daily results and look more long term then were going to be
there when its time in the end.
McBride is confident this wont be the last time the teams meet.
I would love to see them again, said the senior, who won a match at state last
year for the first time.
Well be a different team by then.
Other area teams finishing in the top 10 were Rogers (seventh), Auburn Riverside
(eighth) and Sumner (ninth).

Volleyball | Auburn Mountainview losses
By Sandy Ringer
Seattle Times staff reporter
AUBURN East Valley of Spokane spoiled Auburn
Mountainview's bid to win its own Puget Sound Adidas Volleyball Tournament and
retain its No. 1 ranking in Class 3A.
And Mountainview's Megan McBride would like to express her gratitude.
"They showed our weak areas," the Oregon State-bound setter said after the
25-18, 25-19 loss in Saturday's championship match. "We want to thank them for
that, because now we know what to work on."
Still, it was the best finish for the Auburn Mountainview Lions in the
three-year history of the tournament, which drew a quality field.
McBride can't wait for a rematch, which could come at state.
"I'd love to see them again at state," she said. "I hope we do. We'll be a
better team by then."
Of the 24 teams entered, 15 were state qualifiers last season and eight were
ranked in the top-10 in their respective classifications in preseason polls.
Mountainview did not lose a game in two rounds of pool play, going 12-0, but was
pushed to three games in the semifinals by sixth-ranked Shadle Park, another
Spokane school. Unranked East Valley, meanwhile, advanced with a 2-0 win over
Kamiak.
Unranked Kamiak, which beat Rogers of Puyallup in last year's tournament final,
placed third with a young squad. The Knights started the week by knocking off
Shorecrest, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. They then reached Saturday's semifinals
before losing a close one to East Valley, 25-21, 26-24, then topped Shadle Park
in a one-game contest to decide third and fourth, 25-21.
"I'm very pleased," first-year Kamiak head coach Natalie Bowie said. "It's a
huge confidence boost. To be honest, I didn't think we'd be ready for a
tournament like this.
Notes
Auburn Riverside, rated No. 9 in Class 4A after reaching last year's 3A title
match, showed some youth and inexperience in finishing eighth. The Ravens lost
2-0 to Mountainview in the second round of pool play, which knocked them into
the lower half of the Gold Bracket, where they then lost to Lynden and Rogers.
Lynden, rated No. 7 in the Washington State Coaches' Association 2A poll, had
an impressive showing, finishing fifth. Archbishop Murphy, rated third in 2A was
18th. The Lyncs knocked off Kamiakin of Kennewick, which came in ranked No. 7 in
4A, in their final match of the day, 2-1.
Other finishers were Sumner (ninth), Tahoma (11th), Seattle Prep (12th),
Bainbridge (14th), Jackson (17th), Auburn (20th), White River (21st), Lake
Stevens (22nd) and Inglemoor (23rd).

Who's your No. 1 in state volleyball?
Posted by Sandy Ringer - Seattle Times
If you're looking for a prep volleyball fix, you can find it here today, and
pretty much every Monday throughout the season.
The Seattle Times' Class 4A and 3A state polls make their debut in tomorrow's
paper, and you get a sneak peak below. It wasn't easy putthing them together. I
made dozens of phone calls and three things were very apparent:
1. Mead of Spokane deserves the opening nod in 4A, despite heavy graduation
losses. That happens when you've won five consecutive state titles, as the
Panthers have. Sure, they return only one starter, but she happens to one of the
top junior recruits in the country -- 6-foot-5 Alexis Olgard, who recently
committed to USC. Kentwood of Covington might look better on paper, but
tradition trumps that in September.
2. Roll the dice in 3A. There is no concensus favorite, thanks in part to the
reclassification cycle. Hanford, the defending champ, is still in 3A, but has
little experience back. Auburn Riverside, last year's runner-up, is back up to
4A, and should make waves there. So why not Auburn Mountainview, even though the
Lions have yet to win a state trophy?
3. It's another banner year for the sport in Western Washington, where Division
I recruits abound. The South Puget Sound League 3A along features four players
with Pac-10 commitments -- Mountainview's Megan McBride (OSU), Sumner's Jocelyn
Levig (Oregon), Enumclaw's Gabbi Sisco (Oregon) and Lakes' Deedra Foss (UW).
Foss is just a junior.
I expect much debate about who should be the 3A favorite. When Auburn
Mountainview was ranked No. 1 in the first state coaches' poll, I wasn't the
only one who was a bit surprised. Certainly, McBride is a talent, and the Lions
picked up a pair of key transfers (sisters) from Silverdale. And, sure, Momi
Bowles is an excellent coach who has gotten this young program up and running in
a hurry. Remember, Mountainview is just a fourth-year school. But it's rare to
give the preseason No. 1 to a team that has never won a state trophy. The Lions
went to state in 2006 ((0-2) and '07 (1-2).
That said, I ultimately took a why-not approach after looking at what else is
out there in 3A. I won't be surprised to see a young Hanford team back at state,
but the Falcons will have to work their way up my rankings. Shorecrest and
Kennedy (which has another D-1 kid in OSU-bound Ashley Eneliko), are both very
good, but haven't gotten the job done at state recently either, in terms of
winning it all.
I looked at Prairie of suburban Vancouver and Shadle Park of Spokane, both of
which dropped a classification this year. Either one could take the title, but
don't necessarily deserve top billing at this point either. Bishop Blanchet is
in that reloading (not rebuiling) phase, but Eastside Catholic might is
considered the Metro favorite by many, with Holy Names a top contender, too.
There's Sumner and Mount Si and Mercer Island, plus a couple other good Spokane
schools. So, take your pick. I did, and went with Auburn Mountainview.
In 4A, this could be the year Kentwood finally climbs to the top after stumbling
the past two years. Remember, the Conquerors have lost only two matches during
that span -- one to Mead in the 2006 quarterfinals and one to Lewis and Clark of
Spokane in last year's semis. Both went five games. K-Dub has some talented
seniors who want to go out in style.
Issaquah comes in as the KingCo 4A favorite after seeing some success in 3A. In
fact, a couple of coaches told me the top three KingCo 4A teams might be
Issaquah, Skyline and Newport, which all were 3A a year ago. But watch out for
Bothell.
At any rate, here are my rankings and I welcome your thoughts.
Class 4A
1, Mead (Spokane) With 6-5 junior Alexis Olgard (USC commit), Panthers have
six-peat possibilities
2, Kentwood (Covington) Seasoned seniors (two losses in two years) could finally
Conquer it all
3, Lewis and Clark (Spokane) Last year's runner-up still has an Ocean (as in
Oceana Bush) of talent
4, Monroe Kylin Munoz (No. 6 senior in the nation) should lead Bearcats up the
ladder
5, Skyview (Vancouver) A year older, Storm could blow away the competition
6, Issaquah Eagles soar into 4A with high trophy hopes
7, Kamiakin (Kennewick) Still 3A in size, Braves opt up and bring down opponents
8, Curtis (University Place) Vikings back for more after earning first-ever
trophy
9, Auburn Riverside Brooke Bray sparks last year's 3A finalist
10, Edmonds-Woodway Warriors have a shot at first trophy since 1997
Others (alphabetically) -- Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma), Bothell, Eisenhower
(Yakima), Inglemoor, Kamiak, Kentlake, Marysville-Pilchuck, Newport (Bellevue),
Olympia, Puyallup, Rogers (Puyallup), Skyline (Issaquah), Southridge
(Kennewick), Richland, Spanaway Lake, Walla Walla.
Class 3A
1, Auburn Mountainview With Megan McBride (OSU) and transfer Tara Patton, Lions
roar to the top
2, Shorecrest (Shoreline) Another year, another trophy run for the Scots
3, Kennedy (Burien) Ashley Eneliko (OSU) presents major (road)block for
opponents
4, Prairie Drop from 4A helps gives Falcons a great flight plan
5, Sumner With Jocelyn Levig (Oregon), Spartans could levitate to the top
6, Shadle Park Storied 4A program (5 titles, 13 trophies) brings extra pop to 3A
7, Mount Si Wildcats should improve on last year's eighth-place showing
8, Eastside Catholic Look for Crusaders to have a breakout season
9, Mercer Island Hungry Islanders anxious to do some damage after disappointing
2007 finish
10, Bishop Blanchet Tradition outranks turnover as young Braves canβt be
overlooked
Others (alphabetically) -- Black Hills, Bonney Lake, Camas, East Valley
(Spokane), Enumclaw, Hanford, Holy Names, Lakes (Lakewood), Mount Spokane, Union
(Vancouver).

Class 3A Volleyball Preview
by Sandy Ringer

Remember all of that talk about the lack of dilemma, debate and drama in picking
a preseason favorite in 4A? Well, there are strong doses of all three in the 3A
picture.
That doesn't mean there's a shortage of talent at this level. Quite the
opposite. Some of the state's top players hail from 3A schools, including
Division I commits Megan McBride of Auburn Mountainview (Oregon State), Ashley
Eneliko of Kennedy of Burien (Oregon State), Jocelyn Levig of Sumner (Oregon),
Gabbi Sisco of Enumclaw (Oregon), Deedra Foss of Lakes of Tacoma (Washington)
and Cameryn Irwin of Prairie (Oregon), to mention a few. All are seniors except
Foss and Irwin, both juniors.
There just doesn't seem to be a clear team favorite, which should make for an
exciting season.
The opening coaches' poll put Auburn Mountainview on top, a bit of a surprise
since the Lions have yet to bring home a state trophy. That definitely should
change this year and, mind you, Mountainview is just a fourth-year school. There
is some state experience as coach Momi Bowles took teams there the past two
seasons and the 2007 group won a match.
McBride (6-1 S), a lefty, causes fits with her ability to set and hit and she
makes others around her better.
"What makes her so special is she is so unconditional with her teammates and she
brings people along with her," Bowles said. "Some kids play at a level and it's
all about them. Megan, every step of the way, has tried to bring us along with
her on her journey."
The Lions, who play in the South Puget Sound League 3A, return four other
starters - senior Krystle Hansen (5-8 OH), juniors Alexi Morton (5-8 MH) and
Sharlaya Thomas (5-9 OH) and sophomore Alex Odren (5-6 L). Then they got a bonus
when sisters Tara and Tricia Patton moved from Bremerton to Auburn with their
family. Tara, a 6-1 senior MH, is the kind of player who might put the Lions
over the top and Tricia, a 5-11 junior OH, adds quality depth along with some
other key newcomers.
McBride is excited about the team's state potential.
"We're hoping to place this year and maybe even win," she said. "Our goal is to
definitely get to state and do some damage when we get there."
Levig (6-1 OH) has similar hopes for her Sumner squad, another SPSL 3A team,
which has come home from the past two state tourneys without any hardware.
"I think we're going to be really good," she said. "This being my senior season,
I want to go out with a bang, so to speak, and really give it my all."
Levig is one of four starters back, joining juniors Kailey Smith (5-9 S), Kayla
Roberts (6-0 RS) and Sidney Erickson (6-1 MH). Plus, the Spartans got a key
addition with senior Amanda Dills (6-1 OH) transferred from White River of
Buckley.
"I have high hopes this will be a good year," coach Mike Fitzpatrick said.
Sisco (6-0 S) gives Enumclaw a chance in just about any match. Even Bonney Lake
could make some noise - if the Panthers can get out of that tough SPSL 3A, which
now also includes Lakes of suburban Tacoma. The Lancers won the Western
Conference title last year, but fell short of the state tournament. Foss (5-8 S)
makes the Lancers go and her twin sister, Tori Foss (5-4 L), is solid, too.
Patti Hoeks, who happens to be their aunt, takes over as head coach this year
after four years as an assistant at Black Hills in Olympia.
Shadle Park, which won three big-school titles in the 1980s, should make an
immediate impact in 3A. The Highlanders return three senior starters - Amy
Before (5-7 OH), Lindsay Niemeier (5-11 S) and Kylee Rector (5-3 L), plus
another regular in senior Nikke Urquart (5-10 OH). Coach Brooke Cooper also has
high praise for junior Shasha Mitchell (5-11 MH).
"We've got some really high goals," Cooper said. "We're going to push ourselves
and see what we can do."
The Greater Spokane League has at least two more quality 3A teams in East Valley
and Mount Spokane. East Valley has 10 of 11 players back from last year's squad,
led by seniors Amanda Heibert (5-10 MH), Kelsey Kurtz (5-7 S) and Justin Simpson
(5-7 OH). Junior Allie Riggin (5-11 OH) is a big-time hitter, too. This could be
the year the Knights get to state for the first time since 1996.
"We feel we have a good chance this year," coach Jim Door said.
Mount Spokane placed eighth last season, but has no returning starters. A pair
of 6-foot juniors - Jaclyn Brim (OH) and LeAnne Lloyd (MH/RS) -- help make the
Wildcats dangerous again.
And what about Hanford of Richland, the defending champion? Good question. The
Falcons lost a ton - including all-stater Brittney Quick, a 6-2 dandee now at
Montana - and some say this will be a down year for the team. But coach Hugh
Harris still has some talent, led by juniors Jordan Bird (5-11 MH) and Holly
Lindgren (5-10 OH).
"We're going to be young and take our lumps early," Harris said. "But I still
think we're going to be back at state. We're going to learn by baptism under
fire."
Bishop Blanchet, which won the 2006 title and finished third last year after a
semifinal loss to Hanford, is young, too, with as just one starter back in
senior Kathy Mentele (5-9 MH). But the Braves traditionally reload in the Metro
League and few will be surprised to see them push for another trophy, despite
their general lack of height.
"We're better defensively than we were last year," said Matt Chang, who took
over as head coach last year after Joanne Gilligan married and moved out of
state.
He expects good things from senior Melissa Geiss (5-9 OH), junior Sarah Hubbard
(5-9 MH) and sophomore Cloe Sliger (5-8 S). The X-factor might be whether the
state deems OH Summer Nash (6-1, Jr.) eligible after she transferred from Mount
Si, where she was a key reserve on a team that placed eighth in Class 3A.
Chang is quick to point to Eastside Catholic as the league favorite and a team
that should make some noise at state.
"I think this is going to be their breakout season," he said.
Eastside coach Andrew Ness, in his third year, hopes so, too.
"Our kids are really motivated to not only get to state, but do very well
there," he said.
The Crusaders have their starting lineup back, led by four-year veteran Ellie
Radich (5-10 OH), who is headed to the University of Pennsylvania.
"She generates more swing in her arm than I've ever seen," Ness aid. "She hits
the ball really, really hard and she's an incredibly smart player."
The team also returns seniors Kelly Carroll (5-9 MH) and Stephanie Malasa (5-10
MH) and juniors Brooke Bachesta (6-2 OH), Sarah Pancottine (5-5 L) and Kelsey
Miller (5-3 S), along with sophomore Cami Silverman (5-10 OH).
Expect Holy Names of Seattle to be in the mix again, too. The Cougars finished a
school-best fifth at state last year and coach Brian Richards has high hopes
again, despite losing eight seniors to graduation, including hard-hitting
Tangerine Wiggins, now at Washington State University.
"I actually feel this year's team can be better than last year's," he said.
Four starters return - senior Emily Halvorson (5-5 L) and juniors Annemarie
Falaniko (5-8 OH), Kelly Nielsen (5-11 OH) and Arista Burwell-Chen (6-0 MH).
And don't expect KingCo 3A to be a bunch of marshmallows after losing that trio
of teams to 4A. Mount Si took eighth last year and has lots of talent back,
including senior Miranda Pratt (5-11 OH), who has committed to Idaho. Seniors
Mackenzie Peerboom (5-11 MH) and Bethany Frieler (5-6 L) also return along with
junior Robyn Schirmer (5-8 S). Keep an eye on sophomore Zoe Gogan (6-2 OH),
whose father, Kevin, played in the NFL.
Coach Bonnie Foote likes to keep a low profile, but admits this team could be
really good.
"We're physically capable, without a doubt," she said. "I think we have the
potential to be there (at state) as long as everyone develops and improves."
Mercer Island lost just three players from the team that got to state last
season, and coach Dino Annest said the Islanders are anxious to make amends for
their 1-2 showing there.
"They're mad in a healthy way," he said. "They're hungry."
Janelle Chow (5-7 OH) is a four year starter who leads a strong contingent of
seniors that also includes Chelsea Jurkovich (5-7 L), Shayda Sanii (5-10 OH) and
Lindsay Chinn (5-7 RS). Junior Sabrina Rasmussen (5-11 MH) is another key
player.
Shorecrest from North Seattle is a state regular, taking fourth last year behind
the play of four-year setter Anna Herold. Coach Dave Morhouse expects to crank
out another contender.
"We should have another good year in us," he said.
The Scots return their other setter, senior Kerry Clavadetscher (5-9), and have
firepower up front from seniors Jamie McDonald (6-0 MH) and Gloria Tseng (5-10
OH) and juniors Gabi Leif (6-2 MH) and Nicole Swenson (5-10 MH). They get battle
tested playing in the WesCo against some of those top 4A squads.
Look for Kennedy of Burien to make another strong run this season after last
year's seventh-place showing. The Lancers typically dominate in the Seamount
League and this should be no exception, especially with Eneliko (6-0 MH) even
stronger at the net.
"Every year she comes back significantly better than the year before," coach Tom
Muckerheide said.
The Lancers have three other senior starters back - Amanda Zilke (5-10 MH),
Emily Jovanovich (5-10 OH) and Rachel Sanders (6-0 OH/RH).
Prairie, out of the Greater St. Helens League, already is turning heads this
preseason and has another new head coach in Andrea Doerfler - the school's
seventh different mentor in the past nine years. Haley Doerfler, a 6-0 middle
and the coachs daughter, is a key reason the Falcons could soar this season.
And there's lots of other quality players. Junior setter Cammie Irwin (5-11)
returns, as do seniors Cassie Irwin (5-10 OH) and Vandessa Veeder (5-3 L).
Camas from Southwest Washington is considered another 3A contender after
reaching the 3A tourney with a young team last year. Three starters are back -
seniors Tenielle Schroeder (5-10 MH) and Kindall Gilge (5-6 DS) and sophomore
Stefani Sorenson (5-11 OH), who has D-1 potential. The Papermakers did take a
hit when senior setter Kila Adams (5-7) transferred to Union, a second-year
school in Vancouver that now could make some waves. Sophomore Marleen deZoete
(5-9) is developing at the position for Camas, according to coach Julia Nidick,
who still has high hopes for her team.
"We're just as strong," she said. "I'm not worried."
Black Hills of Olympia is also a team to watch.

Big beginnings in
volleyball, cross country

Enough about football, right? There's more to love about
high-school sports, and I'd like to talk a little about one of
my favorites -- volleyball. I've kind of become our high-school
volleyball "expert," and I use the term very loosely, since
Kentlake won those three state titles in 2000-01-02 behind the
efforts of eventual-All American Courtney Thompson, a key cog in
the Washington's national championship a couple of years ago
(although Kentlake also had a half-dozen other very talented
players, some of whom went on to enjoy successful college
careers).
I've covered the past five state 4A or 3A tournaments
(primarily 4A) and likely will be over in Kennewick for this
year's event (I'm still mad at the Tacoma Dome officials for
backing out on that all-classification tournament that was
supposed to be there last fall to instead host a Dixie Chicks
concert!). Mead of Spokane has been phenomenal, winning four 4A
titles in a row, but frankly I'm ready for a West-side champion
and we have some candidates in Kentwood of Covington, Rogers of
Puyallup and Kamiak of Mukelteo, to mention a few.
Some of the state's top teams were at Auburn Mountainview
yesterday for the Puget Sound Invitational. Kamiak, No. 6 in The
Times' preseason rankings, beat No. 4 Rogers in the title match,
25-23, 25-23. Auburn Riverside, No. 7 in 3A, wound up third. The
Ravens lost to Rogers in the semifinals, then beat Shadle Park
of Spokane (No. 5 in 4A) in their final contest. Mind you, that
third-place match consisted of one game, which Auburn Riverside
won 25-15.
Inglemoor played Kamiakin of Kennewick in the match to decide
fifth and sixth places, losing 25-22, 25-9. Kamiakin is rated
No. 4 in 3A. Mount Si, No. 5 in 3A, was a rather disappointing
12th in the field of 16. Host Auburn Mountainview wound up 10th,
beating Mount Si in a tight match along the way (25-22, 22-25,
17-15). Sumner was 13th and Bainbridge (ranked No. 8) took 14th.
We're going to see some great play in the South Puget Sound
League 3A this season. Four of the eight teams made it to state
last year (Auburn Mountainview, Auburn Riverside, Enumclaw and
Sumner) and it looks like another solid group.

It's a
`bittersweet' volleyball victory for Mountainview coach
AUBURN -- It was an emotional Tuesday
night for Auburn Mountainview volleyball coach Momi
Bowles.
Bowles, who spent the previous three
years coaching at Kent-Meridian, and the Lions upended
the Royals in three games - 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15 - for
a South Puget Sound League North Division win.
``It was bittersweet,'' Bowles
conceded. ``I just stayed pretty focused on my side of
the net. I didn't pay attention a lot to their side.''
Megan McBride led the Lions (1-1) with
nine kills and three blocks while Nicole Claudon added
10 assists, seven kills and two aces.
Kent-Meridian fell to 0-2 in North
Division play. |

AMV trips up Tahoma
AUBURN -- It didn't take long for Auburn Mountainview to get
into the win column.
Behind a strong all-out performance from freshman setter Megan McBride, the
Lions upended Tahoma, 25-12, 25-18, 28-26 in a South Puget Sound League North
Division no-count match on Tuesday night.
``It was a big sense of accomplishment,'' Auburn Mountainview coach Momi Bowles
said. ``What's nice is the things we've been training and working on really came
together.'' McBride, a 6-foot left-handed setter, paved the way to the first
victory in Auburn Mountainview's history with 13 kills and two blocks.
``There aren't too many (of those),'' Bowles said of her left-handed setter.
``And they're a very special type of player in the game of volleyball. She's
been nothing but incredible for us.''
Nicole Claudon added 16 assists and five aces in the win.
It was the Lions first win in four matches this season.
